Wojtus is brought up by his single father for whom "bringing up" means mainly corporal punishment. The father favors this method as the only correct and effective. The boy meets various forms of institutionalize violence in school and in the church. Beaten up and humiliated, he eventually buds a wall around him withdrawing form any form of deeper relationship with other people. Eventually he escapes from home.

Wojciech at the age of 30, ambitious and self-reliant, seemingly has found his place in life. He lives off occasional journalism, practises caving. His life is precisely organized, but lonely. In the mountains he meets Tania, who clearly wants to turn this relationship into a love affair. Wojciech feels emotional emptiness, does not plan his future, and does not want to be with a woman. Responsibility drowns him in panic. He is haunted by his childhood memories, “Etched in his soul”, permanent. He fears he might turn into a monster for his child just like his father was a monster for him. His father’s death turns out to be a real breakthrough...
